A Quick Way to Speed up Your Site

Posted in Thoughts and Tips by jimsreviews on February 17, 2010

I wanted to see if I could speed up one of my websites today by adding gzip compression. I opted for a method that involved using the .htaccess page. I tried a couple of different lines of code that I found online and some of them didn’t work and others seemed to slow things down a bit. I came across a website with simple code to deflate the html code. It worked and my site passed the gzip test on a couple of sites. One site noted that the compression % was 55% which was great. Load time was already under a second, but not it is really fast. The option I chose was the “compress certain file types by extension” option.

Just be careful when working with the .htaccess file as it can be finicky if you mess it up. Here is a link to the page where I found the code. There is a lot more information there worth reading. Gzip Compression Information
